How to tether your Iphone 3G using windows xp & NETSHARE Application.

Seen alot of guides out there but only for OSX. So i thought i would put together a step by step on how to tether your IPhone 3G to your windows xp pc or laptop. I am going to go through this step by step so follow along and you to will be tethering in no time.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

- JAILBROKEN IPHONE 3G
- SSH INSTALLED and running
- LAPTOP with wireless :)

STEP 1.

Open browser and enter the following link
http://rapidshare.com/files/137507309/NetShare.zip

STEP 2.

Click free user on the left hand side unless you have a rapidshare account.

STEP 3.

Click the big download button in the center of the screen.

STEP 4.

Save the file somewhere on your desktop

STEP 5.

Extract the content of the file. I am doing this by right clicking on the file and selecting extract here. I am using a program called WINRAR which can be downloaded at www.rarlabs.com You should then see a payload folder and in there a folder NetShare.app

STEP 6. - Installing NETSHARE using WINSCP via SSH

- first connect your IPHONE to your home wireless network and get the wireless IP of your IPHONE, on the phone SETTINGS KEY then WIFI KEY then RIGHT ARROW on the right hand side of the screen this will expand and show you the IP.
- next download http://rapidshare.com/files/137546521/winscp416.exe.html
- start WINSCP by executing the file after it has downloaded (CLICK OPEN)
- you should see a window like this.

- next enter in the IPHONE’s ip address and click login
- this will prompt you for a username, put in root

- next is the password there you put alpine
- sometimes it asks you to accept the certificate just click yes to that.
- now you should be able to browse your iphone
- from the remote drop down select the root folder

- from there double click the applications folder shortcut and it will take you to the application directory

- now browse over where you extracted your NETSHARE application select it and hit F5 to copy it over
- next right click on the copied folder on the right hand side to set permissions or select and hit F5
- change the 0755 to 0777 and click the bottom checkmark to set group
- click ok
- shutdown the phone by holding the sleep key for 5 seconds and slide to power off
- turn your phone back on and you should see the NETSHARE APPLICATION now installed.
- you wont ever have to do this again unless you restore your IPHONE

STEP 7.

Now that you have NETSHARE installed we can proceed on creating the AD-HOC network on your laptop. What this is do ? Well this in sense turns your laptop's network card into a wifi point. So you will see it with the Iphone just as you would see a router. Here is the basic process.

- Click Start
- Click Control Panel
- Select Network Connections
- double click your wireless network connection

- click Change advance settings on the left

- Select Wireless Networks tab at the top
- Click ADD

- Enter Network name i used IPHONE3G
- Select checkmark at the bottom that says "This is a computer-to-computer (adhoc)networking.
- I also changed it to disable encryption for this tutorial.

- Click OK
- Click OK in the windows under that as well.
- now click your wireless connection again same as before and you should see something like this.

STEP 8. – Connect your iphone to the laptop.

Do this in this order.

- from the pervious screen shot click CONNECT on the IPHONE3G network so it starts searching

- next on the phone click SETTINGS button then select WIFI second on the list.

- This should come up with a network called IPHONE3G

- Click to connect

- You will notice on your laptop will screen will change to this.

- if this comes up you have successfully connected your IPHONE with your LAPTOP

STEP 9. Testing your connection.

- Open firefox
- Click tools drop down
- Click advance tab

- Click settings beside the connection section.
- Select Manual Configuration

- And under socks host put in your iphone IP address
- To get your iphone wifi ip click SETTINGS – WIFI – RIGHT BLUE ARROW to expand. Mine is 169.254.145.61

- Click ok
- Click ok
- Now remember to launch netshare at this point on your laptop
- Load your test page and viola you are tethering with your IPHONE 3G

Maybe against AT&T's policy Mike. Luckily not everyone in the world using iPhones has AT&T. I'm using Fido in Canada and their plans allow tethering.

Great instructions, but as of a short while ago you can save yourself all this nonsense and just get PDAnet from Cydia. Trust me, you'll see what I mean...
